What the money was for

How this is counted

From the county's own payments files: every payment of £500 or more, by the date on each line. A payee's postcode is where the county pays it, which is not always where the work is done: a national firm with a Hastings office counts here, and a local service run from Lewes doesn't. TN35 also reaches a few villages just outside the borough.

Counted from April 2025. The county's files before then are laid out differently and hold far less a quarter (about £110m, against £180m and more since), with payments booked to account codes the older files don't use, so they aren't set beside the newer ones.

Left out of every figure: tax, national insurance and pension contributions passed on from staff pay, and money passing through rather than spent. Payees the council withholds, and payees whose names read as a person's, are never listed and their postcode isn't kept; with payees whose files gave no postcode, they come to £12m that can't be placed.
