What the borough council measures of the air in Hastings, from its
yearly report to the government: nitrogen dioxide at roadside sites, and particles
at its monitor in Bulverhythe.
The report says: “Hastings Borough Council undertook non- automatic (i.e. passive) monitoring of NO2 using 14 diffusion tubes, covering 12 locations, during 2025.”
It compares each site “with the air quality objective of 40µg/m3”, an annual mean.
The tables below give each year's annual mean in µg/m³, at the site itself, after
the corrections the report describes.
The report also says: “No exceedances of the annual or 1-hour mean air quality objectives were measured in Hastings Borough, in 2025.” “Hastings Borough Council does not have any declared AQMAs.”
“–” means the report gives no figure for that year. Each tube is
beside a road, so its figure is for that kerb, not the streets around it. A street
page shows the sites on that street, or else the nearest within 500 m.
The Bulverhythe monitor (HT1)
A continuous monitor beside the A259 at Bulverhythe.
The report says: “An annual average concentration of 12.2 µg/m3 was measured at Hastings Borough Council’s sole PM2.5 monitor, in 2025. Whilst this is below the UK AQS of 20µg/m3, it is above the 2040 target value of 10µg/m3.”

The West Hill monitor
The report says: “At the time of writing, groundwork has begun on the installation of a new continuous monitoring station on the West Hill Open Space, which will add to our understanding of pollution in the Borough.” A residents' briefing from the Environment Agency says: “A period of calibration and quality assurance of the monitoring equipment will then begin and it is estimated data from the AQMS will be published from September 2026.” On 12 October 2026 a monitor at Hastings was not in UK-AIR's list of national monitors.
The report is yearly, so there is no reading for today here.
Defra's UK-AIR publishes daily forecasts
and its national monitors' readings.
