Schools and early years

The 25 open schools in Hastings borough, as the Department for Education's register lists them (18 primary, 3 secondary, 4 special), with 9,041 pupils at the January census, and what Ofsted said at each one's latest inspections. East Sussex County Council is the education authority and coordinates applications for places.

Listed by phase, then name. Nothing here ranks schools: a school's Ofsted outcomes are shown as Ofsted states them, with the date of each inspection, and its report is a click away. Applying for a place: the schools topic has the county's dates.

Ofsted changed how it inspects schools in November 2025. A school inspected since then has a report card: each area is judged on Ofsted's five-point scale (exceptional, strong standard, expected standard, needs attention, urgent improvement) and safeguarding is met or not met. Before that, graded inspections gave each area a grade (outstanding, good, requires improvement, inadequate), and from September 2024 no overall grade. Ungraded inspections said whether a school's standards had been kept up. Each school below shows each kind it has had, newest first, in Ofsted's words.

The register also lists Lansdowne Children's Centre (secure units), which isn't a school families apply to, so it isn't listed here.

Nurseries, pre-schools and clubs

28 childcare settings on non-domestic premises with a Hastings postcode, on Ofsted's register as at 30 June 2026: nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups and out-of-school clubs, by name. School nursery classes are part of their school, above. Since November 2025 early years settings get report cards too.

Ofsted doesn't publish childminders' names or addresses, or any area smaller than the parliamentary constituency for them. In the Hastings and Rye constituency (which also takes in Rye and the villages around it) Ofsted counted 19 active childminders, 8 home childcarers and 1 other childcare on domestic premises on 30 June 2026. East Sussex County Council's childcare pages help families find one.
