Questions at Full Council (3)
Former Convent Fire and Independent Review. “Councillor Kay asked whether an independent review could be undertaken into the events leading up to the fire at the former convent site, its management and the lessons learned. She also asked whether, if the matter could not be debated at the meeting, it could be brought to a future meeting of the Council.”
The answer, as minuted: “Councillor Haffenden explained that Council Procedure Rules did not provide for an emergency motion or independent inquiry. He advised that a multi-agency debrief was already planned to consider lessons learned, identify any improvements that could be made and ensure that findings were shared with councillors and other relevant parties.”
Beach debris. “Councillor Kay asked regarding the recent incidents of shipping containers washing ashore, what measures are being taken by Hastings Borough Council in response to plastic insulation foam that has washed up along the local coastline?”
The answer, as minuted: “Councillor Walker advised that additional cleaning crews were deployed to the beach to clear debris from the plastic insulation foam washed ashore. Waste is being collected in sacks to help identify its origin and assess whether compensation may be pursued. A further crew was deployed the following day.”
Biobeads. “Councillor Kay asked why dead seals that washed up around the same time as the biobeads incident in late October and early November were not preserved for investigation by the Environment Agency?”
The answer, as minuted: “Councillor Walker explained that the seals had already been collected from the beach and sent for incineration before the request for an autopsy was received. She confirmed that arrangements are now in place to ensure that, if any further cases occur, the council can preserve the animals for investigation before disposal.”
At meetings: named as present at 9, apologies sent to 0
From the minutes on the record since Wed 24 Sep 2025. Minutes list who was present and who sent apologies; an absence without apologies isn't recorded, and committee seats change during the year, so these are not a share of the meetings a councillor was expected at.
Items whose minutes say this councillor moved or seconded a motion, asked a question or spoke. The minutes summarise; they don’t record everyone who spoke, so this is what was minuted, not everything said. What they said is in the minutes, linked from each meeting.
The borough's registers of interests are only on its own site, behind a check that stops automatic reading, so each borough councillor's page links to their register there.
